Understand key early childhood socio-cultural theories
Apply early childhood socio-cultural theories to inform and guide holistic child development and learning in an early childhood setting.
Plan and review enriching learning experiences
Use knowledge of multiculturalism, family diversity, and biculturalism in the New Zealand curriculum framework, Te Whāriki, to provide and review learning experiences for infants, toddlers, and young children.
What You're Signing Up For
This 19-week, blended programme combines theoretical knowledge with hands-on practicum experience to prepare you for a career in early childhood education. You'll learn about child development, bicultural curriculum principles, health and safety, diversity, and professionalism in early childhood settings. The course includes a significant practicum component, embraces the bicultural principles of Te Whāriki, and supports students to develop a personal teaching philosophy and inclusive practice. Weekend study options may be available for those currently employed in the sector.
Course Content
- Learning and Development Theories (15 credits): Broad theoretical understanding of learning and development, concept of Ako, neuroscience, attachment, socio-cultural theories, wellbeing, health, safety, nutrition.
- Culture and Identity (15 credits): Communication and interaction with diverse cultural groups in Aotearoa New Zealand.
- Professional and Ethical Principles and Practices (15 credits): Understanding legislative documents and their impact on ethical practice.
- Early Childhood Practicum (15 credits): 60 hours of practical experience within an early childhood setting.
What you need to know first
NCEA Level 2; or equivalent academic achievement on a case-by-case basis; or at the discretion of the Executive Dean.
