Explain and apply key early childhood socio-cultural theories to effectively guide the holistic development and learning of children in an early childhood setting.

The New Zealand Certificate in Early Childhood Education and Care (Level 4) (In-work/home based) at UCOL is designed for individuals already employed in home-based or early childhood care. This 19-week full-time programme deepens understanding of child development, cultural diversity, Te Whāriki curriculum, and professional practice, including 60 hours of practicum completed in the student's current workplace. Flexible delivery includes evening and weekend tutorials and online learning, with course modules on learning and development theories, culture and identity, professional and ethical principles, and a substantive practicum component. Graduates are equipped to foster inclusive, nurturing environments for tamariki and whānau, with pathways to further study such as the Bachelor of Teaching (ECE) or the Level 5 Diploma in Early Childhood Education.
What you need to know first
NCEA Level 2; OR equivalent academic achievement; OR case-by-case discretion of the Executive Dean.

UCOL is a polytechnic built around the kind of learning that actually sticks — hands-on, practical, and grounded in the real world. With campuses across the lower North Island and a programme range that stretches from trades and health to creative arts and IT, it's a strong fit for learners who want a clear path into work without unnecessary detours. Whether you're fresh out of school, changing direction, or building on what you already know, UCOL is set up to meet you where you are.
