About This Course
This non-beginner short course offers experienced jewellery makers the opportunity to extend their craft through group demonstrations and personalised projects, led by specialist tutors at the Dunedin School of Art. Each term features a new skill such as sand casting, stone carving, chain and brooch making, or saw piercing with hydraulic press forming. Participants must have basic workshop skills and prior jewellery making experience, particularly in soldering and saw use. Classes run mornings or evenings each week, and you must enrol per term. Additional materials costs apply.
Course Content
- Term 1: Casting using Delft clay (sand-casting process for metal objects)
- Term 2: Basic stone carving and stone setting; use of wet diamond grinding tools
- Term 3: Chain and brooch making; working with silver, copper, or brass
- Term 4: Saw piercing and hydraulic press; creating intricate and 3D lightweight shapes
- Individual projects supported by tutors
- Group demonstrations on advanced jewellery techniques
