The Postgraduate Diploma in Visual Arts at Otago Polytechnic is a one-year (full-time) or two-year (part-time) programme designed for graduates seeking advanced knowledge, skills, and research experience in the visual arts. Students engage in systematic, supervised studio research culminating in a professionally exhibited body of work accompanied by critical writing. The programme fosters professional, technical, and conceptual mastery within flexible, student-centred supervision and an active artists’ community. Graduates are prepared for employment in creative, curatorial, educational and management contexts, and may progress to Master’s level study.

Face-to-face learning in a physical classroom setting

It will take a total of 1 year

Produce critical academic writing (total 5,000 words) related to studio work and contemporary visual arts practices.
Exceptionally, significant documented professional experience in visual arts may be considered
Submission of annotated portfolio, curriculum vitae, and project proposal
Interview as part of selection process
English language requirements: NZ University Entrance OR IELTS 6.5 (no band below 6.0) OR acceptable equivalent

In-person study
