The Postgraduate Diploma in Visual Arts at Otago Polytechnic is a one-year (full-time) or two-year (part-time) programme designed for graduates seeking advanced knowledge, skills, and research experience in the visual arts. Students engage in systematic, supervised studio research culminating in a professionally exhibited body of work accompanied by critical writing. The programme fosters professional, technical, and conceptual mastery within flexible, student-centred supervision and an active artists’ community. Graduates are prepared for employment in creative, curatorial, educational and management contexts, and may progress to Master’s level study.
Course Content
- Studio Practice (choice of Ceramics, Electronic Arts, Jewellery & Metalsmithing, Painting, Photography, Printmaking, Sculpture, Textiles, and interdisciplinary options)
- Supervised research and studio work
- Theory-based coursework including research methodologies
- Critical writing: completion of two essays (2,000 and 3,000 words)
- Group seminars, critiques, and research workshops
- Exhibition opportunities in Dunedin and regional galleries
